Nail Health Line

There is currently no evidence-based medical evidence proving that the "nail health line" as it is commonly known among the people (mostly light white/light gray lines distributed longitudinally on the nail surface) is directly linked to specific visceral diseases. Most of its occurrences are related to three types of reasons: slight damage to the nail matrix, short-term nutritional fluctuations, and local external force extrusion. There are only a few special morphological changes that require medical attention to identify risks.

Nail Health Line

A while ago, I went for a manicure. The girl who did the manicure stared at the pale white line that had just grown on my thumb and sighed, saying, "Sister, you have stayed up too late recently, and your liver has problems. This is a health warning line." I almost took out my phone and called the gastroenterology department on the spot. Speaking of which, during the two years I worked as an assistant in the dermatology department, I received at least a hundred patients who came for consultation because of this line. The one that impressed me most was a little boy in the second year of high school. He had a dark white line almost 1mm wide on each thumb. His parents took him to three hospitals for physical examinations, and there was nothing abnormal. After checking it out, I finally found out after asking for a long time that the child was holding the pen too hard while writing the questions. The pen barrel pressed against the nail matrix at the base of the thumb for a long time, and the nails that grew out after a slight injury had strings on them. I went back and changed the pen holder. I came back for a follow-up visit three months later, and the strings had long since been cut off along with the growing nails.

Of course, this does not mean that the folklore theory is completely unfounded. I helped my grandma sort out the old health pamphlets she had saved for decades, and I also saw specially drawn pictures of nail lines corresponding to internal organs. The older generation believed that the deeper and thicker the lines, the weaker the Qi and blood, and the heavier the burden on the liver. This statement is more empirical and is not supported by large-scale clinical data. It can be used as a reference, and there is no need to diagnose yourself by looking at your nails.

Sometimes you stay up late for a week to catch up on a project, or you don't eat enough protein for half a month to lose weight, and lines may suddenly appear on your nails. I stayed up for five days last month to report, and I got a line exactly like the one on my hand now. I didn't take any supplements, ate and slept normally, and after more than a month, my nails grew to the point where I cut them off, and there was no trace left. Some people are even more unjustly accused. They have light vertical lines on their small nails. The elderly in the family have been saying for decades, "You have been weak since you were a child." In fact, the nail matrix given by your parents is not naturally smooth, and it has nothing to do with health. My aunt is like this. She is over sixty this year. She has had that line for forty years, and the physical examination report is cleaner than that of a young man like me.

However, this does not mean that all lines should be ignored. If you find that the lines on your nails are black and become wider and wider within half a year, exceeding 3mm, with blurred borders, and even the skin around the nails turns black, then don’t hesitate and go to a dermatologist for a checkup to rule out the risk of onychomycosis or even melanoma. This is something you really need to pay attention to. Also, if all ten nails suddenly develop similar deep lines, and at the same time, the nails become brittle, easy to delaminate, and have pits, then it is most likely due to hypothyroidism or a lack of trace elements. Just go and get a blood test to check. There is no need to guess whether it is due to kidney failure or liver failure.

I talked about this with my colleagues in the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine before, and their views are actually quite pertinent. They said that if your line suddenly becomes deeper and you have uncomfortable symptoms such as fatigue, oiliness, and a yellowish complexion, then treat it as a reminder from your body. There is no harm in doing a routine physical examination to check your liver function. Just don't use it as a basis for diagnosis. It is better than carrying on with the real discomfort.

To put it bluntly, the body signals that can be reflected by fingernails are limited. Don’t be frightened by online health posts or a few words from nail salons and buy liver-protecting tablets and health care products that replenish qi and blood. If you are really unsure, just spend more than ten dollars to register for a dermatology department. The doctor can tell the difference after just two glances. It is much better than trying to scare yourself by searching Baidu for a long time, right?
