Patients with chronic prostatitis can generally conceive, but severe infections or untreated conditions over a long period may affect fertility. Chronic prostatitis may be associated with factors such as bacterial infections, urinary dysfunction, and immune abnormalities, and is primarily characterized by symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and pain in the perineal area.
For most patients with chronic prostatitis, proper treatment does not have a significant impact on their fertility. Once the inflammation is under control, the quality of semen and the motility of sperm usually return to normal. If there is only a mild inflammatory response, the changes in the composition of prostatic fluid are minimal, and the environment in which the sperm survive is not significantly disrupted. In such cases, patients can go through the conception process normally and there is no need for excessive worry.
In a small number of patients who have undergone severe bacterial infections or have not received proper treatment for an extended period, persistent stimulation by inflammatory factors may lead to abnormal semen liquefaction and decreased sperm motility. In some patients, there may be changes in the pH of prostatic fluid or a decrease in the secretion of fibrinolytic enzymes, which directly affect the motility of sperm. If there are also complications such as blocked vas deferens or epididymitis, the likelihood of natural conception may be further reduced. Such patients require anti-infective treatment and fertility assessment under the guidance of a doctor.
Patients with chronic prostatitis should avoid prolonged sitting, excessive alcohol consumption, and spicy foods during the period of trying to conceive. Regular warm sitz baths can help relieve pelvic congestion. If there are abnormalities in semen or if conception does not occur after a prolonged period, it is recommended to visit a reproductive medicine center for a semen analysis and prostate function tests. Based on the results, an individualized treatment plan can be developed. Maintaining moderate exercise habits on a daily basis, and engaging in aerobic activities 3-5 times per week, can help improve blood circulation in the pelvis.
