Since the first day of its establishment, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has assumed the important task of cultivating traditional Chinese medicine talents nationwide. From the national Western medicine study class of traditional Chinese medicine to the institutionalization and standardization of teacher-to-teacher education, to the perfect combination of teacher-to-teacher education and the postdoctoral system, every step taken by the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in the history of inheriting the quintessence of Chinese medicine is the first of its kind.

Known as the "Whampoa Military Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine", the Graduate School of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has trained a large number of outstanding graduate students of traditional Chinese medicine at home and abroad, enriching the diversified talent pool. As a powerful supplement to institutional education, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has gradually expanded its scale of continuing education for in-service staff and even for Chinese medicine practitioners across the country. It has comprehensively launched vocational training projects with the main task of cultivating various specialized talents, and effectively promoted the construction of a Chinese medicine talent team.

China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences trains leaders in the traditional Chinese medicine industry

Over the past 60 years, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has been unswervingly committed to the revitalization of traditional Chinese medicine and the development of Qihuang.

The teaching of master and apprentice is passed down from generation to generation

The ancients said, "Continue the past to learn from the saints."

Lu Zhizheng, a master of traditional Chinese medicine and a senior researcher at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, once said that learning traditional Chinese medicine "goes beyond poetry." To become an excellent traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, one must have a profound foundation in traditional Chinese medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine education must be able to adapt to the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine.

What is the education model that conforms to the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine? Wang Yongyan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and honorary president of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, said: "Teacher-to-teacher education is the main model for the continuation and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine. This is a unique path for traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. ”

Create a precedent for teacher-to-teacher education

Teacher-to-teacher education, an important way to cultivate TCM talents, was proposed as early as 1958. On February 7, 1958, the Ministry of Health issued a "Notice on Actively Inheriting the Academic Experience of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the Aged", requiring the health administrative department to immediately start investigation and research, and mobilize a group of outstanding young and middle-aged Chinese and Western medicine doctors on a voluntary basis to worship famous old Chinese medicine doctors as their teachers.

The China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine carefully summarized the results after graduating from the first national Western medicine study class. It carefully studied and formulated a new mentoring and apprenticeship plan. It identified 31 famous doctors and experts from within the hospital and selected 104 apprentices to inherit the experience of famous old Chinese medicine doctors in the form of traditional mentoring and apprenticeship. This was the first nationwide "young talents worship famous teachers".

Famous teachers produce great disciples, and among these students there are many names that we are now familiar with: Shi Dianbang, Lu Weibo, Zhou Aixiang, Chen Keji, Guo Shikui, etc. "Young talents worship famous teachers" is a successful practice of traditional Chinese medicine education under the traditional master-apprentice teaching model after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It has effectively inherited and carried forward the essence of the motherland's medicine, and unearthed and rescued the technical expertise of a group of old Chinese medicine experts who were on the verge of being lost.

The China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences attaches great importance to the inheritance of academic experience of veteran TCM experts. Since the establishment of the academy, a total of 64 veteran TCM experts have become 1 to 5 batches of nationally famous senior TCM experts’ academic experience inheritance instructors. Their personality, growth history, academic attitude and academic achievements still inspire future generations of TCM practitioners to keep moving forward.

Since some famous veteran Chinese medicine doctors are old and some have passed away one after another, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has taken emergency measures and carried out a comprehensive and systematic rescue work to sort out and verify their personal lives, academic views, academic achievements and inheritance context. In 2013, "The Huazhang of Chinese Medicine - The Atlas of the 1st to 5th Batch of National Veteran Traditional Chinese Medicine Experts of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences" was published.

"Huazhang of Chinese Medicine" has left valuable wealth in rescuing, sorting out and inheriting the academic experience and technical expertise of veteran Chinese medicine experts, cultivating modern famous Chinese medicine practitioners, and improving the ability of Chinese medicine to prevent and treat diseases. At the same time, it is of great significance for the country to inherit, add, supplement, and expand the professional knowledge and skills of practitioners after the education in traditional Chinese medicine colleges and universities, to inherit and develop the unique advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, and to build a team of traditional Chinese medicine talents.

  Major innovations in teacher-to-teacher education

The China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has introduced the postdoctoral work of inheriting the academic experience of famous traditional Chinese medicine experts based on respecting the historical experience and rules of the growth of traditional Chinese medicine talents. The "postdoctoral system" has been introduced into the inheritance of academic experience of famous old traditional Chinese medicine experts. Through a series of measures such as equipping old traditional Chinese medicine experts' studios, two-way selection, financial assistance and other measures, high-level traditional Chinese medicine talents with doctoral degrees will be selected for old traditional Chinese medicine experts as researchers for the inheritance of academic experience.

In October 2012, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine officially launched the national postdoctoral work on traditional Chinese medicine inheritance, which was organized and implemented by the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. After more than a year of hard work, the first batch of 133 legacy postdoctoral supervisors and 134 postdoctoral fellows were selected from 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country.

On December 26, 2013, the kick-off meeting for the first batch of national postdoctoral work on inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine was held in Beijing. Wang Guoqiang, deputy director of the National Health and Family Planning Commission and director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, pointed out at the meeting that inheriting postdoctoral work is an exploration of a new model for cultivating leading talents in traditional Chinese medicine.

Now two years have passed, and the postdoctoral fellows cherish the opportunity to learn from famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Jing Lu, chief physician of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Eye Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, stops his outpatient clinic every week and goes to Guang'anmen Hospital of the Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences to follow Dr. Lu Zhizheng. Although he is 95 years old, Mr. Lu still insists on working on the front line. He also has seven or eight students under him, and personally revise the medical cases and clinical experiences summarized by the students every day.

“"Familiarity with Wang Shuhe is not as good as clinical syndrome." Postdoctoral fellows need to summarize 100 medical cases of their mentors. Mr. Lu has very strict requirements for students: medical cases without follow-up consultation and without curative effect cannot be summarized. Jing Lu found that only after summarizing a certain number of medical cases, could he get a glimpse of the teacher's clinical thinking. "The feeling then was different from when I just started reading."

In the past, Jing Lu focused on promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis in his clinical work. After following Lu Lao, the teacher assigned her to read Wang Qingren's "Correcting Mistakes in the Medical Forest" again and told her "Don't stick to one method and one method." This gave Jing Lu a clearer understanding of Wang Qingren's "nine methods of promoting blood circulation", and gradually broadened his thinking, no longer limited to promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis as in the past.

Many legacy postdocs feel that they are the lucky ones "standing on the shoulders of giants". They deeply feel that legacy postdocs are an innovation, university is quality education, and postgraduate period is scientific research education. Allowing people with these foundations and clinical work experience to inherit the academic ideas of famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioners can better achieve the goals of inheritance, development and innovation.

Since 1958 to the present, the level of TCM talents has been continuously improved under the teacher-to-teacher education model, and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has gradually become a fertile ground for cultivating leading talents in TCM.
