There is no way to directly draw a conclusion with a "yes" or "no". HRV is heart rate variability, which reflects the regulatory state of our autonomic nervous system. Whether this 40ms value is normal depends on your age, long-term monitoring baseline level, and basic health status.
I have met many users who have just started to use wearable devices to measure sleep. They panic when they see that the sleep HRV is only 40ms, and they check everywhere to see if there is a heart problem. In fact, there is no need to do so. At present, there is no unified "standard value" for sleep HRV in the industry. The reference range of resting HRV for ordinary people is originally between 20-200ms. The vagus nerve is dominant during sleep, and the overall value will be higher than when awake and resting, but individual differences can be particularly wide.
Last month, a 27-year-old programmer asked me to adjust his sleep. For three consecutive days, the average sleep HRV was measured at around 41ms, which is almost 20 lower than the average for people of the same age group who exercise regularly. He also said that he had been working on a major version for two weeks in a row recently, and he always felt tight in his chest after sleeping. Later, I asked him to adjust his sleep schedule. , walk slowly for 30 minutes 3 days a week, and after half a month, it returns to about 58ms when measured again. This short-term drop of 40 is actually a signal sent by the body to remind you that you have been under too much stress recently and your sympathetic nerves are too excited. If you leave it alone, problems such as decreased sleep quality and irregular heartbeat may occur.
Of course, not all 40ms is a problem. I used to help a 61-year-old retired teacher sort out sleep monitoring data for half a year. Her average sleep HRV fluctuates between 38-43ms all year round. However, her annual physical examination and heart indicators are all normal, and she can still climb hills in the suburbs with the outdoor team. The cardiologist also said that this value is completely fine for her age. After all, HRV itself will gradually decrease with age. The average sleep HRV of people over 60 years old originally fluctuates around 40ms.
There are now differences in the reference meaning of this value in the industry. Many clinical scholars believe that if your sleep HRV drops by more than 15% from your stable baseline all year round, even if the value is still stuck in the so-called "normal range", you must be alert to whether you have recent potential infections, sleep apnea or emotional problems.; However, some people believe that the HRV monitoring error of consumer-grade equipment is about 10%, and the occasional value fluctuation has no reference significance at all, so there is no need to scare yourself.
In fact, there is really no need to worry about whether a single 40ms is normal. If you have not felt uncomfortable recently, your sleep quality is OK, and you are energetic when you wake up, then this value is normal for you.; If it is accompanied by fatigue when you wake up, palpitation during the day, and anxiety easily, no matter what the value is, it is recommended to do a dynamic electrocardiogram to troubleshoot the problem. It is much more reliable than staring at the value of the wearable device and thinking blindly.
