300-word review of the open class on children’s safety and first aid
The most intuitive gain from this open class on children's safety and first aid, taught by a pediatric emergency nurse from a community hospital, is that it overturned my previous misconception that "one can rely on common sense to deal with emergencies in children." It also put the controversial point of view in the academic circle on "whether young children need to learn basic first aid skills" into perspective.
My three-year-old had a fish bone stuck once before. I was so panicked that I stuffed her with half a piece of steamed bun and pushed it down. Now I feel cold sweat on my back just thinking about it. In class, the teacher used jelly to simulate a foreign body in the airway. When demonstrating incorrect swallowing movements, the jelly was directly squeezed deeper into the airway. In serious cases, it can cause suffocation in a few minutes.
Regarding whether young children should learn first aid, the class did not provide a one-size-fits-all conclusion: one school of thought believes that children have insufficient hands-on skills and will easily misoperate if they learn it. The other school believes that even being able to call someone and state their home address is useful. Finally, the practical plan given by the teacher is also very practical. Children under 4 years old only need to remember "find someone in uniform for help" and "state the community and house number", and there is no need to learn complicated operations. To be honest, we ordinary parents don’t need to force ourselves to become professional first aiders. At least we should not do any harm at critical moments. This is the first line of defense for our children. (Full text 297 words)
