Youth Health Care Initiative

The current youth health care campaign must be truly effective and not be reduced to a mere formality. The core is to break away from the inertial path of "one-way indoctrination, bottom-line prevention and control, and one-size-fits-all execution" and combine the bottom-line requirements of "preventing harm" with the long-term goal of "promoting development" while leaving enough room for differentiated operations for schools, families, and communities to adapt to local realities.

Speaking of which, when I visited a middle school in a county in western Zhejiang last year to investigate, I actually saw negative examples. At that time, the school was in charge of inspections by superiors and temporarily invited all the first and second grade students to hold a special meeting on protecting buds in the playground. The moral education director read the articles on preventing drowning, preventing sexual assault, and preventing campus bullying according to the PPT for two hours, which made the students drowsy. When the meeting was over, I heard two boys in the back row muttering: "I have been listening to these words for three years in elementary school, and my ears are calloused." ”The promotional poster posted in the corner was printed three years ago. The corners are crispy and curled. It also says, "Girls should not wear revealing clothes to avoid harassment." It clearly states that the victim is guilty, but no one wants to change it.

Interestingly, there have always been two completely different ideas in the public health and education systems about what Operation Relief should do. One group is the pragmatic "bottom line group", especially practitioners in grassroots schools and rural areas who are short of manpower. Most practitioners hold this view: There are only two or three moral education teachers for more than a thousand students, and they can't even keep track of students with special physiques. The most important thing is to focus on the links that are most likely to cause fatalities and vicious incidents. Don't engage in fancy activities that occupy class time. The moral education director of a rural middle school in western Guangdong who I have been in contact with said very truthfully: "I just dealt with the matter of three students sneaking into the river to swim last week, so I have to suppress these potentially fatal things first before talking about anything else. ”

The other school is the "developmental school" that prefers long-term health promotion. Most schools and professional children's social work organizations in first- and second-tier cities agree with this direction: "nurturing children is never just a matter of not getting into trouble." The essence is to provide children with a lifelong health foundation - as small as knowing how to reject classmates' cross-border jokes, how to identify additives in fifty-cent snacks, as big as knowing who to ask for help when you have an emotional breakdown, and knowing how to identify bad information on the Internet. These abilities cannot be learned by listening to a two-hour lecture. I was particularly impressed by the approach of a private school in Nanshan, Shenzhen. Instead of holding a unified meeting, they divided the content of child care into daily activities for different grades: in the first grade of junior high school, they played a "body boundary drama" and asked the children to act out "Is it considered offensive if my deskmate slaps my butt?" and "How to refuse when a relative pinches my face."” ； In the second grade of junior high school, I cooperated with the social welfare to teach nutrition classes. I took the Internet celebrity drinks sold in the supermarket and read the ingredient lists one by one. ； A half-day outdoor stress-relief class was specially set aside before the third-grade exams, where everyone could play Frisbee on the lawn and write emotional notes. Last year, there was not a single complaint of campus bullying in the school, and the rate of excellent students in physical fitness monitoring increased by 12%.

Don't think these are trivial matters. I met a little girl in fifth grade before. Her skirt was ripped off by her deskmate for half a semester and she didn't dare to say anything. She would just go home and cry. It was useless for her parents to persuade her to tell the teacher. It wasn't until the school held a small class to protect children, and the teacher led everyone to play a small game of "I decide my boundaries" and asked each child to come on stage and say, "I will feel uncomfortable wherever others touch me." She went back that day and said harsh words to her classmate: "If you touch my skirt again, I will tell the teacher directly that this is my boundary and you can't touch it." ”The matter that had troubled her for a long time was solved like this.

In fact, many people think that it is the school's responsibility to protect Lei. Only when they actually do it do they realize that the school's time alone is simply not enough. I helped organize a parent-child nursery salon for the community before. A father was restless throughout the whole process, saying that he had never mentioned sex education-related content to his son and felt embarrassed. After playing an interactive game with his child that day, he found out that his son had already seen a lot of irrelevant content on short video platforms, and had even heard of the term "date rape drug." When he went back, he specifically found a suitable popular science video to watch with his son. He said that it was a good thing he had discovered it early, otherwise he would have never known what information his child would be misled by. Just like protecting the flowers and bones in the garden, you don't just rely on the gardener. Those who water the flowers, those who build the fence, and those who pass by don't break the branches casually, all have their own efforts.

Of course, there are many examples of cheating nowadays. In some places, they implement lazy policies. A set of courseware lasts for ten years, and the same content is taught in both elementary and high schools.； Others turn the nursery into "scare education", with extreme cases throughout the book, which scare the children so much that they don't even dare to interact with their classmates normally. The most outrageous thing I have ever seen was when a primary school conducted a sex test and asked the question "Does touching a classmate's hand count as sexual assault?" This was completely overcorrected.

I have traveled to more than half of China's schools and communities to do research, and my deepest feeling is that nursing care has never been a high-level political achievement project, it is just about doing every little thing in detail: the teacher found that a child was always in a daze in class recently, so he asked a few questions if he had encountered something.； Parents, don’t ask about your grades as soon as you open your mouth. Talk more about whether there was anything interesting at school today. ； Don’t secretly sell substandard Sanwu snacks in community tuck shops, and don’t let minors in Internet cafes. ； Even if we ordinary people see content that makes pornographic rumors about minors on the Internet and report it casually, we are building a protective net for these growing children. How could it be complicated? If everyone pays more attention, these saplings will naturally grow straight and strong.
