Symptoms of fungal vaginitis in men

Male symptoms of fungal vaginitis usually manifest as itching, erythema, burning sensation or white discharge on the penis, which may be caused by fungal infection. Male infection with fungal vaginitis (medically known as vulvovaginal candidiasis) is mostly caused by sexual contact or low immunity, and needs to be differentiated from diseases such as balanitis.

1. Penis itching

Penile itching is a common symptom, mainly caused by Candida albicans infection irritating the skin and mucous membranes. Patients may experience skin damage after scratching, and need to avoid scratching to prevent secondary bacterial infection. For treatment, you can use antifungal drugs such as clotrimazole cream and miconazole nitrate ointment as directed by your doctor, while keeping the area clean and dry.

2. Erythema or rash

Flake erythema appears on the penis or foreskin with clear edges and may be accompanied by scaling, which is related to fungal erosion of the stratum corneum. In severe cases, dense papules may appear, which must be distinguished from allergic dermatitis. It is recommended to wear breathable cotton underwear, apply bifonazole solution topically, and avoid using irritating lotions.

3. Burning and stinging sensation

A burning sensation that may occur during urination or sexual intercourse is caused by an inflammatory response that stimulates nerve endings. If combined with urethral orifice redness and swelling, urinary tract infection needs to be ruled out. Triamcinolone acetonide and econazole cream can be used short-term to relieve symptoms, but the course of hormonal drugs must be strictly followed.

4. White discharge

Tofu-like secretion can be seen on the inside of the foreskin or the coronal sulcus, which is formed by a mixture of fungal hyphae and exfoliated epithelium. It needs to be washed with warm water every day and the foreskin should be completely turned over for cleaning. Stubborn cases require oral fluconazole capsules for systemic treatment.

5. Chapped skin

If left untreated for a long time, the skin on the foreskin or glans may become dry and cracked, or even form shallow ulcers. In this case, terbinafine spray and moisturizing repair cream need to be used in combination. People with underlying diseases such as diabetes should give priority to controlling blood sugar.

Patients should avoid unprotected sex, and their partners should receive simultaneous treatment. Pay attention to the ventilation of the perineum every day and avoid wearing wet clothes for a long time. If symptoms persist for more than 1 week or symptoms such as suppuration or swollen lymph nodes occur, you must seek medical attention promptly to check for co-infection. During the treatment period, alcohol and high-sugar diet are prohibited to reduce the environment for fungal reproduction.
