Commercial fitness equipment that is regularly circulated and used in compliance with regulations must be accompanied by a certificate of conformity. However, in reality, there are indeed cases where some gym equipment does not have a certificate of conformity.
According to the current "General Safety Requirements for Fitness Equipment" GB 17498 series of national standards, all commercial fitness equipment sold in the domestic market must undergo compliance testing before leaving the factory and be accompanied by a product certificate. Those with electrical devices, such as electric treadmills and spinning bikes, must have an additional 3C certification mark to be considered compliant. Two years ago, I encountered a pitfall when I helped a friend open a community fitness studio with running purchases. One supplier quoted aerobic equipment that was nearly 30% lower than the market price. I asked if they could bring a certificate of compliance and a third-party test report with the goods.
There are also many small gym owners who feel that this piece of paper is useless, as long as the equipment is used smoothly and has no abnormal noise. In order to reduce costs, they either collect second-hand goods that have been eliminated by chain gyms, and the original certificates have long been lost, or directly go to small factories to customize unstandardized Internet celebrity equipment. The cost saved is enough to pay three months' rent. Most members will not bother to check this anyway.
But this kind of fluke mentality can really lead to big pitfalls. My former friend in the city supervisory system said that last year, when they inspected fitness venues in their jurisdiction, more than 30 spinning bikes without certificates were confiscated. There was also a gym in a business district that used a Smith rack made by a small factory without a certificate. When members practiced hip thrusts, they added 120 kilograms. The track deformed and broke people's bones. In the end, they paid more than 200,000 yuan in compensation, and they were shut down for less than half a year.
In fact, you can tell it by yourself when you go to the gym. Regular equipment usually has a certificate label attached to the corner of its nameplate, which is marked with the date of manufacture and implementation standard number. If you can’t even find the manufacturer’s logo on the entire equipment and it still makes a clanging sound after shaking it, then it is most likely a non-compliant product. This does not mean that all uncertified equipment will definitely cause problems, but this thin certificate is essentially a "birth certificate" that guarantees the safety of the equipment. Whether it is a gym or a person who exercises, having it is always a real guarantee.
