Slow down brain aging by dancing the tango
>>>Recommendation: Fitness for the elderly should be done day and night”
Statistics show that 71% of Canadians over the age of 65 live alone. Many people have no contact with the outside world for 7 hours a day. This isolation and the normal aging of humans cause their cognitive abilities to decline rapidly.
To this end, Canadian experts led a team to conduct research. He said they found that dancing the tango improved older adults' ability to do complex tasks and move in confined spaces better than walking.
For the study, the researchers recruited 30 older adults, ranging in age from 62 to 90 years old. These elderly people are very healthy , but they all experienced a fall in the past year and had a fear of falling. The 30 elderly people were divided into two groups, one group learned tango dance, and the other group went for a walk. The two groups exercised together twice a week for 10 weeks at the Lethbridge Rest Home in Lake Constance.
Researchers found that the tango group showed significant improvements in balance, posture, motor coordination and cognitive abilities compared with the walking group. Their ability to walk, stand on one leg or turn around in a limited space was also better than the walking group.
McGinley said that tango should be an ideal recreational activity for seniors and that it meets three basic requirements for exercise: first, it is recreational, second, it is a group activity, and finally, it has practical goals that are recognized not only by the dancers, but also by their family and friends.
