In the study, researchers recruited 30 elderly , aged 62 to 90 years old. These elderly people are very healthy , but they had all experienced a fall in the past year and had a fear of falling. The 30 elderly people were divided into two groups, one group learned tango dance, and the other group went for a walk. The two groups exercised together twice a week for 10 weeks at the Lethbridge Rest Home in Lake Constance. Researchers found that the tango group showed significant improvements in balance, posture, motor coordination and cognitive abilities compared with the walking group. Their ability to walk, stand on one leg or turn around in a limited space was also better than the walking group.
